The dice gods intervened early and often as Vince Meconi’s Allies (1.5 bid) defeated Tom Tow’s Axis. Despite the enormous luck disadvantage, Tim held out until turn 8. We have played previously.

Tom Brawn’s Axis and Dennis Nicholson’s Allies have drawn their game. Dennis Allies won by 2 POC but there was 2 POC bid for the result. The game came down to the end as a maxed damaged convoy had to avoid 7 u-Boats to get to England. The Allies 12 ASW took out 5 of them and the remaining 2 U-Boats missed. Then the Royal navy sunk the German fleet in the Barents to save the draw.

Jim Kramer Jr. (Allies – bid 1.5 POC) has won VS Ken Pascoe (Axis).  The game was played the full 8 turns.  The final raw score was +8 Allies adjusted by the bid to a final score of +6.5 Allies.

T1:  Allied deploy protects NA, SA and NS.  To the Barents 3 4-4-4 are successfully deployed.  They are there to damage the DKM.  Axis deploy – MED: Italians split fleet with half at sea and half in port.  Baltic is patrolled by a 1-2-7, 3 subs stay in port and the rest of the German fleet and the LBA go to the Barents.  In combat Allied LBA sink an Italian CA.  The axis LBA short circuits the 4-4-4 Barents force plans disabling 1 ship and crippling the other 2.  During surface combat the German force sink one BB and disable the other with no losses.  The Axis gains 2 POC on the turn.  Game score to +2 for the Axis.

T2:  Allied deploy – NA: 2 5-5-3, 2 4-4-3, Courageous.  SA: A  4-4-3, 2 CA, Eagle and Glorious.  NS: 3 4-4-4, 2 4-4-3, 3 CA and Formidable.  Barents: Hood, Ark Royal, 3 CA, 2 4-5-6 and 2 3-3-6.  A 3-3-6 fails speed.  Axis deploy – MED/Italy similar to T1 (4 at sea and 5 in port).  ASW strength keeps the subs in port.  A German 2-2-5 patrols the Baltic, LBA to the Barents.  The rest of the German fleet to the NA with a 2-2-5 failing speed.   Combat – Allied LBA in Italy miss.  Axis LBA sinks the Ark Royal.  In the NA a German 3-5-7 is disabled by the CV.  In surface combat all 5 allied ships are sunk.  Cost to the Axis is a 2-2-5 sunk and damage to the BB and BC in the area.  All German ships all return to Germany.  Axis gain 3 more POC.  Game score is now +5 Axis.

T3: No Soviets arrive.  Allied deployment  –  NA:  Convoy 1A, 2 CA and Glorious.  SA:  A 4-4-4, 2 CA and Eagle. NS: 3 4-4-4, 3 4-4-3, a 3-3-6 and Formidable. Barents: 4 CA, Victorious, 3 4-5-6 (succeed) and a 3-3-6 (succeeds).   Axis deploy – NA the 5 subs. MED/Italy as before but 5 at sea, 4 in port.   Barents:  LBA only.  The 2 damaged ships repair in Germany.  The German surface fleet patrols the Baltic. Combat – Allied MED LBA sink another Italian CA.   NA ASW sinks 3 subs with the surviving 2 subs missing the convoy.  Axis LBA sinks the 3-3-6 and damage Hood.  No change to the game score, game score stays +5 Axis.  Convoy 1A will move to the Barents.

T4:  Allied deploy – No Soviets but NY and Augusta come on. NA: 2 US ships, a CA, Convoy 2B and Glorious.  SA: A 4-4-4, 2 CA and Eagle. NS: 3 4-4-4, 3 4-4-3, a CA and Formidable.  Barents: Convoy 1A, Victorious, 4 4-5-6 (1 made speed), 4 CA, the damaged Hood and a 3-3-6 (made speed). Axis deploy – NA: 4 subs.  MED/Italy split fleet with 4 at sea and 4 in port.  Barents: LBA only. Baltic: The German fleet of 10 ships patrols.  Combat – Allied LBA miss in the MED.  ASW strikes big sinking all 4 subs.  Axis LBA misses.  Convoy 1A moves to Russia.  Allies gain 4 POC on the turn reducing the game score to +1 axis.  Convoy 2B will move to the Barents.

T5:  No Soviets but Tuscaloosa joins the US ships.  Allied deploy – NA: 3 US ships and Glorious. SA:  3 CA and Eagle. NS: 4 4-4-4, 3 4-4-3, 2 CA and Formidable. Barents: Convoy 2B, Victorious and Illustrious, 3 CA, 5 4-5-6 (1 by speed), a 3-3-6 and the damaged Hood. Axis deploy – SA: 2 subs and 2 Italian CA. MED: the 6 Italian BB.  Baltic: A 1-2-7.  The 9 remaining German ships (2 BB, 2 BC, 2 PB, 2 CA and the CV) to the Barents with the LBA.  Combat – SA ASW sinks a sub and disables the other.  Allied LBA in the MED cause no damage, Eagle’s airstrike misses.  SA surface combat sees an Italian CA sunk and the other disabled with no damage to the allied force.  Barents –   Allied carriers cripple a 3-5-7.  Axis LBA damage a 4-5-6.  Surface combat sees the allies win the area. The German fleet losses are 2 BC, 2 PB, a CA and the CV. In addition a BB and CA are damaged.   Allied losses are Hood and 3 4-5-6 with 2 4-5-6 and a CA damaged.  With convoy 2B thru to Russia and 4 areas controlled the allies gain another 4 POC.  Game score is now +3 allies.

T6:  There are no Soviet or US ships arriving this turn.  Allied Deploy – NA: The 3 US ships, Convoy 3C and Glorious. SA: 3 4-4-3 and a CA. NS: 4 4-4-4, a CA, 2 CV and Eagle. Barents:  Victorious, 6 CA (1 damaged), 2 4-5-6 (both damaged) and a 3-3-6. Axis deploy – MED: 7 Italian BB. SA:  The remaining Italian CA.  NA: 4 subs. Barents: LBA.  Baltic: a BB and CA with a BB and CA repairing in Germany.  Combat – Allied LBA cause no damage attacking Germany.  ASW sink all 4 subs in the NA.  SA surface fire disables the Italian CA with it causing no damage.  Axis LBA sink Victorious.  Convoy 2B goes to England and 4 areas are again controlled.  The allies gain another 2 POC.  Game score is now +5 allies.

T7: The remaining US ships come on and both Soviets sail. Allied deploy – NA: The, 6 US ships. SA: 2 4-4-3 and a CA. NS: 3 BB, 3 CA Glorious and Eagle. Barents: 2 CV, 2 4-5-6 (both damaged), a 3-3-6, 4 CA (1 damaged) and 2 4-4-4 (1 fails speed to Russia). Axis deploy – SA: the remaining sub and Italian CA. Barents: LBA. MED: 8 Italian BB. Baltic: The remaining 4 German ships (2 BB and 2 CA). Combat – Allied LBA sink a 4-3-5 in the MED.  ASW disables the sub.  SA surface combat sees the Italian disabled again, no allied damage.  Axis LBA sinks a damaged BB.  Baltic combat sees nothing sunk but damage to a German CA and Soviet BB.  The allies gain another POC (4 to 3) for area control. The game score moves to +6 allies.

T8: The undamaged Soviet BB sails.  Allied deployment is set to hold the 4 prime areas (NA, SA, NS, Barents).   Combat of note – Baltic:  The 2 subs here sink the Soviet BB.  SA:  Eagle is there and sinks the Italian CA by airstrike.  Barents: the allies have 3 BB (1 damaged), a BC, 3 CA (1 damaged) and 2 CV here.  Axis sends in the remaining 2 BB and 2 CA (1 damaged).  CV air strikes damage a BB and CA.  Axis LBA sinks the BC.  Surface combat is won by the allies with 3 disables and a sinking of the 4 German ships.  Only 2 allied BB were disabled.  Allies pick up 2 additional POC to +8 on the turn leading to the final adjusted score of +6.5 Allies.

The start for the Axis on T1 and T2 put Ken in a great position.  But with a blockade, good allied ASW on T3-T5 and safe convoy transit the game stayed in play.  Also sinking 2 Italian CA by LBA was very useful.  The game then was pretty much decided after the T5 Barents combat results.  This was a very enjoyable game from the allied player point of view.

Jim Bodenheimer’s Allies defeated Eric Anderson’s Axis in a truly hard-fought match that was as exciting and close as the Chiefs/Bills game. Bid was 2.0 for the Allies. The opening turn Repulse failed its speed roll and the Axis charged in to take advantage, holding the Barents and POC was Axis 2.0. On turn 2, Axis took advantage of a weak presence in the South Atlantic with subs and cruisers and pushed the score to Axis 5.0. Turn 3 the Axis regrouped for their next push. Score moved to Axis 4.0. The Axis used it’s might in the Barents again in Turn 4, crushing the Allied presence there and sinking the convoy.  POC Axis 6.0. On turn 5 the Axis sent their full-strength wolfpack to the North Sea to set the stage for a final crushing blow but it was not to be. It turned out to be an ASW trap and all 7 subs were sunk. The second convoy survived. POC Axis 2.0.  The Axis returned to the Barents on turn 6 but the Allies were rallying. While both side suffered losses and considerable damage, the Allies had the depth of forces to hang on. POC shifted to even. Axis tried to stop the convoy by going to Barents again on turn 7 but carrier air and hull count allowed the Allies to hold on.  The last convoy survived. POC Allies 4.  The few remaining German vessels made a desperation push into the Barents on turn 8 but a crippled Gneisenau was the only heavy available to aid the remaining pocket battleship and cruiser. The subs were swept away as well and the final score was Allies 3 POC after the bid was applied.  A fun game all around that easily could have gone either way.
