  1. Jacob Anderson’s Allies (bid 2) defeated Bruce Monnin’s Axis on turn 7.

The Axis won the North Sea in turn 1, with two ships lost by each side. A bloody turn 2 followed, in which the Allies won the Barents and sunk four Axis ships, including the Bismarck, while losing three of their own.

After an uneventful turn 3 (aside from a U-boat sinking the Ark Royal, the Axis attacked the North Atlantic on turn 4, and while no German ships were sunk. they couldn’t win the area, and the first convoy made it through to Russia.

Turns 5 and 6 the German fleet again stayed home, and while the U-boats and Luftwaffe were able to inflict minor damage, including disabling a convoy, the Allies were able to build up to 3 raw POC.

On turn 7, the Germans attacked the North Atlantic, but after the Luftwaffe failed to sink the convoy in the Barents, the Axis surrendered.

  2. Jim Kramer (allies bid 1.5) has defeated Mike Kaye (axis). After T6 the allies had a +6 POC lead with axis forces blockaded and reduced to 2 damaged German BB and 7 subs. Mike saw no reason to continue and resigned after allied T7 deployment was done. A brief review follows.

T1: Trying a variation of my favored Barents in 1 play I heavily patrolled the NA, SA and NS but attempted to send 3 4-4-4 BB’s to the Barents. All 3 made their speed rolls. Mike’s response was keeping the Italian fleet in the MED, a CA and the 3 subs in the Baltic and the remaining German ships went to the Barents. Combat: LBA – allies MED misses, axis disable a 4-4-4. Surface fire sees Scharnhorst sunk and Gneisenau damaged with return fire sinking a 4-4-4 and disabling the other. Axis gain 2 POC.

    T2: Allied deploy – NA – 2 5-5-3, 2 4-4-3 and a CV. SA – 2 4-4-3, 2 CA and Eagle. NS – 3 4-4-3, 2 4-4-4, 2 CA, 2 CV.
Barents – Hood, Ark Royal, 4 CA, 2 4-5-6 and 2 3-3-6. A BC fails speed. Axis send 4 subs and 4 Italian CA to SA, the damaged Gneisenau to Baltic and the remaining German ships to the Barents. Combat: LBA – Allied in MED damage a 4-6-6, axis Barents cripple KGV. ASW disables a sub with a UK BB damaged in return. Eagle air strike misses. Surface combat: SA – an Italian CA sunk, 1 damaged and 1 disabled. Return fire adds to UK BB damaged.
Italians retreat to France and pursuit combat sees no additional damage. Barents – Allied airstrikes sinks a 2-2-5 and cripples another. Allied surface fire sinks Lutzow, damages and disabled Bismarck and disables 2 CA. Axis return fire sinks Hood and KGV, damages POW and disables a CA. A second surface round sees the German cripple sunk and the remaining CA disabled with return fire sinking a UK CA. Germans blockaded and no change to the game score.

T3: A USSR BB comes in the Baltic. Allied deployment – NA – Convoy 1A, 2 BB, a CA and 2 CV. SA – 3 BB and Eagle. NS – 5 BB, 2 CA, 2 CV. Barents – Ark Royal, 4 CA and making speed DOY, Repulse, Renown and QE. POW repairs. Axis repairs to Bismarck and Gneisenau, 5 subs to the SA, an Italian CA back to the MED with 2 still in France. The remaining Germans, a BB and 3 CA fight the Baltic BB which they sink it with no damage to themselves. Allied ASW sink 2 subs, Eagle disabled in return. Allied LBA miss in Germany, axis LBA damage Ark Royal. Blockade still in place. No change in game score. Convoy 1A will move to the Barents.

T4: Another USSR BB sails and a US BB and CA come on. Allies deploy – NA – Convoy 2B, 2 US ships, 2 CV and a UK BB. SA – 3 BB, 2 CA and Eagle. NS – 6 BB, 3 CA and 2 CV. Barents – Convoy 1A, Ark Royal, 3 CA, DOY, R and R, QE and Anson. POW failed speed to there. Axis surface forces to Baltic, 5 subs to the SA, Italians in MED with 1 CA still in France. Allied ASW disables a sub and LBA sinks a 4-3-5 in the MED. Axis subs and air strikes are all misses. Baltic surface combat sees the USSR BB sunk causing no damage to the Germans. With Convoy 1A to Russia, allies gain 3 POC. Game score moves to +1 allies. Convoy 2B moves to the Barents.

T5: US send another BB and CA on. Allied deploy – NA – 4 US ships and 2 CV, SA – .4 BB and 2 CA, NS – 6 BB, 3 CA, 2 CV and Eagle. Barents – Convoy 2B, 3 4-5-6, 2 3-3-6, a 4-4-4, 2 CA and 2 CV. Howe failed speed to the Barents. Axis hold the Italian CA in France, patrol the MED and send all German forces available (2 BB, BC, 3 CA, CV, 7 subs and LBA) to the Barents. Allied LBA sinks an Italian CA. ASW sinks 3 subs and disables 3. The surviving sub misses Ark Royal. Allied Barents air strikes sink a CA. Axis air damages Repulse and sinks Renown. Allied surface fire damages and disables both Bismarck and Tirpitz and sinks the remaining 3 German ships. Axis return fire sinks POW and a CA, disables DOY and damages another CA. With Convoy 2B getting to Russia the allies gain 4 POC on the turn. Game score now +5 allies.

T6: The last 2 US ships are on. Allied deployment protects Convoy 3C in the NA with 6 US and 2 CV there, looks to hold the Barents (4 BB, 4 CA and a CV) and NS (4 BB, 2 CA, 2 CV and Eagle) and stands for a possible fight in the SA (6 BB). Mike sends a damaged BB to the Baltic, repairs the other and puts 7 subs and 2 Italian CA in the SA. Allied LBA damage the repaired German BB. ASW sinks 1 sub. Axis LBA sink a CA in the Barents. The subs attack all 6 BB damaging 1 and disabling 1. Surface combat sees both Italians sunk without any return damage. Convoy 3C goes to England increasing the allied game score by 1 to +6. With no real options at this point Mike resigned.

The T1 3 BB gamble worked almost as well as I would have wished. Surface combat after that continued to go in my favor until Mike’s forces were almost annihilated. Very lucky for me.

  3. Jeff Lange’s Allies (bid 1.5) have surrendered to Eric Anderson’s Axis in turn 2, following several very one-sided dice affairs. On Turn 1, the Kriegsmarine attacked the Barents (after Renown missed her SR) and sunk 5 British cruisers, while disabling Hood and Repulse. The Gneisenau was lost in return, and then the Ark Royal, Kent and Cumberland escaped in the fog.

On Turn 2, the Kriegsmarine returned to the Barents, except the damaged Scharnhorst got the reprieve of a restful cruise in the Baltic. Meanwhile, with the Royal Navy now a bit more stretched, the Italian cruiser fleet ventured to the South Atlantic with some support from the U-boats. The Baltic luck continued to favor the Germans, as the PoW and Repulse were sunk (and KGV & Renown disabled) with no German ships sunk (but two disabled), setting up a 5 on 3 Rd2 situation favoring the Kriegsmarine. In the South Atlantic, the U-boats whiffed but the Italians disabled Barham, leaving the Eagle as the only round 2 opposition.

At this point the Allies sued for peace, having lost 2 BBs and 5 CAs (with Gneisenau as the only Axis loss) but, more critically, being down 8.5 PoC including the bid.

  4. Ken Pascoe’s Axis defeated Karl Bodenheimer’s Allies on Turn 6.
Turn 1 Allies put significant forces in the North Sea and Barents. Axis attacked NLANT, losing Scharnhorst, Blucher and Hipper, but gaining the sea. Sank Glorious, Valiant, Dorsetshre. Axis +3 POC
Turn 2 German ships hid in Baltic while U-Boats attached SLANT.
Turn 3 German ships hid in Baltic while U-Boats attached NLANT.
Turn 4 German ships hid in Baltic while U-Boats attached NLANT. Convoy 1A disabled by LBA in Barents. Convoy 2B damaged 2 by subs but still at sea.
Turn 5 German ships hid in Baltic while U-Boats attached NLANT. Convoy 1A disabled in NLANT while Convoy 2B (2 damage) landed in Russia.
Turn 6 Italian ships to SLANT, U-Boats to NLANT, German ships to Barents. Italians died for nothing. 2 of 7 U-Boats survived but attacks ineffective. Round 1 in Barents Allies sank nothing, disabled Bismarck. Axis return fire was deadly: sank Hood, DOY, two cruisers, disabled POW, Renown. Remaining forces: five cruisers & carrier vs five Germans and Graf Z. Allies resigned.

  5. Lee Kendter (Axis) vs Michael Ussery (Allied, 1.5 bid) is over with Michael conceding after the end of round 5.

T1 saw Germany take Satl with just 2 Italian CA. 1 Italy CA and one UK BB sunk. 1 German BC crippled. There were a ton of disables. LBA kills Ark Royal in Barents. POC = +3 Germany.

T2 saw Germany take NS with a single cruiser left. I am glad I didn’t try for Baltic Sea. The battle was very bloody. UK lost 4 BB and 1 CA. Germany lost 1 CA and 2 PB. Germany has 1 BB and 2 BC crippled now. POC = +5

T3 saw Germany break NS. All 8 repair points used and still plenty of damage on ships. Sub force not damaged. Nothing sinks this turn. POC = +5

T4 saw Germany break NS. Marat sunk keeping the Baltic Axis. There was another fight in the Satl with Germany winning. The fleet bases in France. The Satl win offset the first convoy landing. POC = +6.

T5 saw Germany break NS again. The Satl win offset the second, badly damaged convoy landing. POC = +7.

The dead pile didn’t budge for Germany since T2. Multiple big ships are badly damage with 21pts of damage to repair. UK lost 6 BB and 2 CA.

At this point Michael resigned. 3 CV dead and 7 subs for T6 left him in bad shape. The pursuit of the CV in Satl wasn’t rolled, but there was a good chance to lose a 4th CV.

  6. In 101-1, Tim’s Axis defeated Jim’s Allies (-2.0) with the score +2 Axis at the end of turn 7 (before the bid).

Jim took the Allies with a bid of 2.0, Facing a Barents on 1 with no speed roll failures, the Axis patrolled the Baltic for the first two turns, losing a U-boat on turn 2 then sortieing to the Barents on turn 3 where a lop-sided 8-2 Allied/Axis ship lost ratio crippled the British fleet. On turn 4, the Axis sailed to the North Atlantic and sank Convoy 2B and had a 5-1 casualty ratio, continuing to reduce the British fleet.

After sinking U-boats on turn 2 and 3, the Allies could only sink 1 U-boat on turn 7 allowing the full U-boat fleet and the 4 Italian cruisers to take the South Atlantic on turn 7, blocking Allied access to the Med and creating a math lock.

    Thanks for playing Jim.

  7. Tom Thornsen playing the Axis has defeated Vince Menconi playing the allies. Vince bid 1.5POC to play the allies. The final POC was Allies +1 and with the bid the Axis wins by 0.5POC.

The Royal Navy shamefully abandoned the Mediterranean, Churchill is outraged, to patrol the other four areas. The Kriegsmarine sorties into the North Atlantic and after an exchange of fire that sinks the Graf Spee and wrecks a pair of Royal Navy Battleships, the Germans return to port conceding 1 POC to the allies.

The Germans patrol the Baltic Sea on turn 2, then sortie into the Barents Sea on turn 3. The Royal Navy has more ships and one more attack die, but the all Kriegsmarine ships have the bonus. The allies sink Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen, wreck the Tirpitz, Admiral Scheer and Blucher. The Royal navy loses three battleships and four cruisers sunk but must withdraw when their last remaining cruiser is opposed by the two wrecked German cruisers. The U-Boats deny the Russians the Baltic Sea and the POC returns to 0.

On Turn 4 the German shipyards are busy conducting repairs while Bismarck, Lutzow and Graf Zeppelin sink the Marat in the Baltic Sea and the U-Boats deny allies control of the South Atlantic. Convoy 1A makes it to Russia.

On Turn 5 the U-Boats weather the storm of 17 ASW rolls in the North Sea to break the blockade, but the RAF hits the Admiral Scheer and Tirpitz that are still under repair rolling a pair of 6’s for hits with 6 damage for each hit! Yes, the RAF rolled four dice and scored four 6’s. Convoy 2B makes it to Russia, allies now have +6 POC.

On Turn 6 the Oktober Revolutia sorties, so the Axis sends the Graf Zeppelin and the 5 surface ships to sink it while the Tirpitz completes repairs. All seven U-Boats go the North Atlantic and manage to sink convoy 3C.

Turn 7 the Axis sends the U-Boats to the North Sea to break the blockade while all the surface ships sortie into the Barents Sea. The Royal Navy has 2 carriers, four battle ships and four cruisers. The Kriegsmarine has 3 battleships, one pocket battle ship, two cruisers and the Graf Zeppelin. After the airstrikes and the first round of surface combat the only non-carrier units left on station is the undamaged Bismarck and three Royal Navy cruisers. The cruisers miss in the next round while the Bismarck does not. The Royal Navy squadron decides to retire leaving the Bismarck to control the Barents Sea. The Axis wins turn 7 with +2 POC moving the score to Allies +4 POC.

Turn 8 and the Axis must win by 3 POC. The Royal Navy sends two battle ships to reinforce the Barents Sea squadron, both passing their speed rolls. The Axis responds by sending a cruiser to patrol the Baltic Sea and having the three surviving Italian cruisers join the Scharnhorst in the South Atlantic. Both Tirpitz and Bismarck pass their speed rolls to join them. The Royal Navy has two carrier and 4 battleships to oppose them, but the dice favor the axis and all the Royal navy surface ships are sunk or disabled after one round of combat. Axis 6 POC, Allies 3 POC is just enough for an Axis victory.

  8. Mircea Pauca (Allies, bid 1.5) won over Bob Jamelli (Axis). We have played previously WAS for AREA.
T1: My Barents-in-1, Germans try NATL but holding one ship for Baltic. Allies keep control, losing Rodney vs 2 small Germans. Score 1 Allied raw.
T2: Both fleets stay home and repair. Stukas sink Renown! 4 U-boats try NATL (7 ASW) and 3 U are sunk!! Same 1 Allied.
T3: Despite one BB failing to reach Barents, German fleet tries to fight the bigger blockading fleet of NSEA. Major losses ensue: 3 British and 4 Germans! RAF sinks Zara. Allies gain 2 PoC, total 3 Allied raw.
T4: Bismarck repairs but gets damaged again in docks! Stukas disable Convoy 1A. Italians and 4U try SATL (3BB,Ark so 6 ASW), they get repulsed and 1U sunk. Score stays 3 Allied raw.
T5: Both Soviets are ready and sail! Germans oppose them with only 3 smaller ships, repairing the bigger 2. Soviets end in control of Baltic! Including convoy1A finally landed, Allies gain 6 PoC, total 9 Allied raw.
    Bob surrendered at this point.

  9. Andy Choptiany’s Allies defeated R. Frisby’s Axis in Match 7. The bid was 2 POC for the Allies. On T1,the Axis went to the NAO and were beaten back. They never recovered. Allied ASW and Air were devastating bringing on the Axis resignation at the end of T5 with the raw score of Allies 5 POC. We have not played before.

  10. Bruce Monnin’s Axis have defeated Jonathan Lockwood’s Allies. The POC was even at the end, with the Axis winning by the 2.5 POC bid.

Axis won battles in the South Atlantic on Turn 1 and North Atlantic on Turn 2. After two British ships failed speed rolls to the Barents on Turn 5, the Axis attacked and failed to win the area. After that it came down to air and subs, with the Luftwaffe disabling the first two convoys that reached the Barents. A convoy got through on Turn 7, and the remaining two convoys reaching port on turn 8 would have given the Allies a 0.5 POC win. But the 15 ASW only removed 1 sub, and the 6 remaining U-Boats managed to disable that convoy to secure the win.
