Tom Brawn (Axis) defeated Daniel Blumentritt (Allies). Bid was 1.5 for the Allies. He got some good attrition on my fleet including 2×456 and 2×553. I never did sink the big boys but I got rid of 5 of his 6 cruisers so his navy was very top heavy. The real key was when his uboats and IT cruisers got a surprise defeat of the RN in South Atlantic on Turn 6. On the same turn in North Atlantic a 50/50 battle came down to Convoy 3C vs Prinz Eugen – the Convoy sunk the Eugen and the Eugen disabled the Convoy to leave the area totally empty!

He never sunk a convoy but he got 3 or 4 disables on them, so only 2B made it to Russia. 3C made it to England and 1A was still stuck in the US due to the backlog!

On the final turn I needed to pick up 2 POC to win, which meant controlling all of the big 4 areas and getting the convoy through. I was a heavy favorite to beat his fleet but first I had to knock out 6 uboats with 11 shots, only a 10 to 12 percent chance, and I didn’t get it, so he locked up the minimum 0.5 POC win.

Jim Bodenheimer’s Axis baaaarely defeated Andrew Choptiany’s Allies in a photo finish battle after a back and forth game. On turn 1 Renown failed to make the Barents so the Axis jumped in and took it while sinking Repulse and 3 cruisers while losing Scharnhorst. Axis 1 before bid of 2 for the Allies. Turn 2 the Axis stayed home except using UBoats in the North Atlantic and Allied LBA sank Guilio Cesare and Zara, POC still Axis 1. In turn 3 Axis LBA struck back, sinking Ark Royal and Formidable while Uboats sank Ramilies in the North Atlantic and Marat was sunk in the Baltic.. Allied LBA claimed Fiume. POC still Axis 1. Turn 4 the Allies built a steel wall in Barents and North Sea to keep the Germans locked up. The only casualty was Oktober Revolution. POC Axis 2. Turn 5 saw the first Allied convoys setting sail. That convoy barely survived the UBoats in the North Atlantic with 3 damage points. POC still Axis 2. In turn 6 the Allied wall continued to hold and the first convoy survived although Pola didn’t and the second convoy was disabled back to the USA. POC now Allied 1. Turn 7 was quiet with no losses. In turn 8 everything hinged on the Germans trying to take the North Sea and it turned into a nail-biter. Allies had only Barham and Royal Oak remaining against Scheer and Graf Zeppelin. Allied fire damaged and disabled Scheer and crippled Graf Zepp. Axis return fire damaged and disabled Barham and sank Royal Oak, basically setting the win by 1 damage point. Axis ends the turn with 6 POC to Allies 4. The final before bid is Axis 1 but it doesn’t begin to show the razor edge this game ended on. Great game and I would have said that either way it ended!

In the 115-14 game Tim (-1.5 Allies) triumphed over Bob (Axis).

The Axis challenged the North Sea on turn 1 and were turned away. The Allies slowly kept the blockade up until 17 ASW failed to sink or disable a single German U-boat in the Barents. Despite that the Allies were able to heavily attrit the German fleet leaving only the Bismarck and Tirpitz on turn 8 when the Axis conceded with the score +10 Allies adjusted to 8.5 after the bid.

Jim Kramer Jr. (Allies – bid 1.5 POC) has defeated Dwayne Westerhausen (Axis).  The game was played the full 8 turns.  The final raw score was +4 Allies adjusted by the bid to a final score of +2.5 Allies.

T1:  Allied deploy protects NA, SA and NS.  To the Barents 3 4-4-4 were sent with 1 successful.  The BB is there to damage the DKM.  Axis deploy – MED: Italians split fleet with half at sea and half in port.  Baltic is patrolled by the 2 1-2-7 CA, 3 subs stay in port and the rest of the German fleet and the LBA go to the Barents.  In combat allied LBA miss in the MED.   The axis LBA also misses.  During surface combat the German force sink the UK BB with no damage suffered.  The Axis gains 2 POC on the turn.  Game score to +2 for the Axis.

T2:   Allied deploy – NA: 2 5-5-3 and 2 4-4-3.  SA: 2 4-4-3, 2 CA and Eagle.  NS: 4 4-4-4, a 4-4-3, 2 CA Courageous and Glorious.  Barents: Hood, Ark Royal and Formidable, 4 CA, 2 4-5-6 and 2 3-3-6.  Both 4-5-6 BB fail speed.  Axis deploy – MED/Italy same as T1 (5 at sea and 5 in port).  The 4 subs go to the NA.  A German CA patrols the Baltic. The LBA and the remaining 8 German ships go to the Barents.    Combat – Allied LBA in the MED sinks an Italian CA.  ASW sinks 2 subs with a 4-4-3 disabled in return.  Barents air strikes see a German CA sunk and the Hood disabled.  In surface combat the allies only damage a 3-5-7.  German fire sinks both 3-3-6, a CA and Ark Royal.  The remaining UK ships are disabled or escape.  Axis gain 3 more POC.  Game score is now +5 Axis.

T3:  Marat sails.  Allied deployment – NA:  2  5-5-3 and a 4-4-3.  SA:  A 4-4-3, 2 CA and Eagle. NS:  3 4-4-4, 3 4-4-3, a CA, Courageous and Glorious. Barents: Hood, 4 CA, Victorious and Formidable, 3 4-5-6 (succeed) and a 4-4-4 (succeeds).   Convoy 1A stays in port.  Axis deploy – NA 3 subs. MED/Italy sends 5 ships to sea and leaves 4 in port.   Barents:  LBA only.  The damaged 3-5-7 repairs in Germany.  The German surface fleet (8 ships) moves to the Baltic. Combat – Allied and Axis LBA cause no damage.  ASW and subs the same.  Marat cases no damage and is sunk in return.  No change to the game score, game score stays +5 Axis.

T4:  Allied deploy – No US/Soviet ships join in.  USSR BB was available but did not sail.  NA: Glorious, 4 CA and Convoy 1A.  SA: 4 4-4-3.  NS: 2 5-5-3, 3 4-4-4, a 4-4-3, a CA, Eagle and Courageous.  Barents: Formidable and Victorious, 4 4-5-6 (1 made speed), a 4-4-4, Hood and 2 CA. Axis deploy – SA: 5 subs.  MED/Italy split fleet with 4 ships at sea and 5 in port.  Barents: LBA only. Baltic: The German fleet of 10 ships patrols.  Combat – Allied and Axis LBA cause no damage.  ASW and subs also miss.  Convoy 1A moves to Russia.  Again no change to the score, game score stays at +5 axis.

T5:  No Soviet or US ships available.  Allied deploy – NA: Convoy 2B, 4 CA and the Illustrious and Formidable.  SA:  4 4-4-3.  NS:  2 5-5-3, 3 4-4-4, a 4-4-3, a CA, Eagle, Glorious and Courageous.  Barents: Convoy 1A, Victorious, 2 CA, 5 4-5-6 (1 by speed), a 4-4-4 and the Hood.  Axis deploys – NA: 7 subs. MED/Italy split fleet with 4 ships at sea and 5 in port.  Baltic: A 1-2-7.  The 9 remaining German ships (2 BB, 2 BC, 3 PB, a CA and the CV) to the Barents with the LBA.  Combat – NA the ASW sinks 2 subs.  Axis return fire disables the convoy.  Allied LBA in Italy sink a 4-3-5 and a CA.  Barents –  Allied carriers miss the targeted German BB’s.  Axis air score a big hit sinking the convoy.  Surface combat sees the allies win the area sinking a BB, BC, PB, CA and the CV with the other German ships disabled.  Allied losses were 3 4-5-6 and a CA.  Of the 4 disabled heavy allied ships, 3 were damaged.  Again no change to the score, game score stays at +5 axis.

T6:  Washington and OR come on this turn.  Allied Deploy – Baltic:  OR.  NA: Washington, Convoy 2B and 4 carriers. SA: 3 4-4-3, a CA and Eagle. NS: 2 5-5-3, 3 4-4-4, 2 4-4-3 and 2 CA. Barents:  Victorious, 3 CA, 2 4-5-6 (both damaged), Hood (damaged) and a 4-4-4. Convoy 3C cannot sail.  Axis deploy – MED/Italy: The fleet is split with 4 at sea and 4 in port.  SA:  The 7 subs are here.  Barents:  LBA.  Baltic: The 5 remaining German ships (a BB, a BC, 2 PB and a CA).  Combat – Allied LBA sink a 4-3-5 in Italy.  Axis LBA miss in the Barents.  SA:  ASW sinks a sub and disables another.  The remaining subs missed Eagle.  Baltic:  OR is sunk with no damaged to the German ships.   Again no change to the score, game score stays at +5 axis.  Convoy 2B will move to the Barents.

T7:  Texas, NY, Augusta and Wichita come on. The game score forces the allies to begin a move to the MED.  Allied deploy – NA: The, 5 US ships, convoy 3C, Illustrious and Formidable.  SA: 3 4-4-3 and Eagle. NS: 4 BB, 3 CA, Glorious and Courageous. Barents: The same as T6 with convoy 2B. MED:  2 5-5-3 and a 4-4-3.  A 5-5-3 succeeds on its speed roll with the others failing to Malta.  Axis deploys – SA: the 7 subs go here. Barents: LBA. MED: 6 Italian BB sail with the 2 CA staying in port.  Baltic: The remaining 5 German ships patrol.  Combat – Allied LBA miss in Italy.  Axis LBA miss in the Barents.  SA:  ASW sink 2 subs and disable 1.  The remaining subs sink Eagle.  MED:  The 5-5-3 is sunk without causing any damage to the Italians.  With convoy 2B getting thru the allies gain 3 POC for the turn. The game score moves to +2 axis.  Convoy 3C will move to the Barents.

T8: The last US CA comes on.  The allies must move on the MED this turn.  All other deployments to hold what can be held.  NA:  The 6 US ships.  SA: a 4-4-3, a CA and a carrier.  NS:  3 4-4-3, 2 CA, 2 CV.  Barents:  Convoy 3C, Victorious, 4 heavies (3 damaged) and a CA.  MED: 2 CA, Formidable, a 5-5-3, a 4-4-3 and 3 4-4-4.  A 4-4-4 fails speed so 2 get in.  Axis:   SA:  6 subs.  Baltic: a CA.  NS:  A BB, a BC and 2 PB.  MED:  6 BB, 2 CA and the LBA.  Combat – SA:  ASW sinks 3 subs, return fire cripples the CV.  NS:  Allied carriers score big with Bismarck damaged (5) and Gneisenau disabled.  Surface combat sees the allies clear the area losing 2 BB.  MED:  Allied airstrikes score here too with a 4-3-5 sunk and a 4-6-6 disabled.  Axis air merely damages Nelson.  In surface rd1 the allies sink a 4-6-6, cripple and disable another and damage the other 4-6-6 (5).  The 4-3-5 BB is also disabled.   Axis fire sinks 2 BB but Nelson is missed.  Allied rd2 eliminates the 2 Italian CA’s.   Axis rd2 sinks Nelson.  Rd3 combat sees the remaining BBs for each side disabled.  With the convoy unopposed the allies score is 7-1 POC for the turn.  Game score to +4 allies adjusted by the bid to a +2.5 allied win.

This game was looking bad for the allies until good die rolls on T8 delivered the game to myself.  The T7-T8 move to the MED was necessary as Dwayne was able to keep the game score frozen mid-game.  I do think Dwayne would have been better served throwing everything into stopping convoy 3C on T8.  At least he might have let his LBA have a shot at it in the Barents.  A big ”WHEW!” from me on managing to pull this game out.  Sorry Dwayne.

Ken Pascoe (Allies, bid 1.0 POC) conceded to Rob Drozd after Turn 7. Although all 3 convoys reached Russia, Axis was able to offset their POC by holding North Sea on Turn 5 and SATL on Turns 6 and 7. Allies had only 1 CV remaining after turn 7. final POC was Axis 6 (7 after bid adjustment).

  6. Tom Thornsen's avatar

Dennis Nicholson (Allies) has conceded to Tom Thornsen (Axis) after the allies Turn 8 ASW failed to clear the U-Boats from the Barents Sea. The allies cannot gain the 1 POC needed to secure a tie as they cannot control the Barents Sea even if they drive away the Kriegsmarine. This is not the first time we have met on the ladder.

Boring game, really. Axis controlled the North Sea on turn 1, but the Luftwaffe sank the HMS Ark Royal and HMS Renown in the Barents Sea. On turn 3 the Kriegsmarine won the battle of the Barents Sea, but the follow up battle on turn 4 went to the allies. After that the German fleet patrolled the Baltic Sea as the Allies ASW failed to sink enough U-Boats to protect the convoys. Two of them were sunk in the North Atlantic, only one reaching Russia.

Final POC was Allies +1, but Dennis be 2 POC to play the allies so the Axis wins by 1 POC.

  7. Eric Anderson's avatar

Eric Anderson’s Allies (bid 1.5) defeated Bruce Monnin’s Axis in a hard fought, exciting game that went the full 8 turns. On Turn 1 the Axis got off to a hot start, sinking 2 battleships, 1 cruiser and Glorious in the North Atlantic, while both Repulse and Renown (!) were sunk by the Luftwaffe. Things were not looking good for the Royal Navy, but then all of the breaks went in favor of the Allies on Turn 4, with only one of four Germans making their speed roll to the North Atlantic. The resulting battle was very bloody for the Kriegsmarine, which lost 5 ships including both 357s and Graf Zeppelin, and suddenly the Allies were in a commanding position. However, the very next turn, the Italians – with lots of U-boat support – broke out in the South Atlantic to get the Axis back in the game.

Like so many War at Sea games, ours came down to the fate of the final convoy. This time the dice gods smiled on the Allies, and Convoy 3C pulled into Murmansk on Turn 8, giving the Allies a 2.5 point victory after the bid.

Lee Kendter (axis) vs Mircea-Valer Pauca (allies, 1.5 bid) ends with Mircea conceding after T3. The German PoC was at 9 before bid.T1 saw Germany go to Satl. I killed 2 UK BB losing nothing. 4 ships managed to oil up streching UK for T2 deployement.T2 saw Germany return to Satl. I lost Germans 4 ships. The finaly roll saved it some getting 3 kills. However, I only killed 5 UK ships (3 cruisers). The attrition was horrid. In addition, the surface chase of the Ark Royal failed with just a disable. The good news is my PoC lead went up to 9. T3 saw a battle in Barents after 456 failed its SR. The subs and LBA chased another 456 away. I killed 2 crusiers, and a 336. PoC held at 9 since I skipped Baltic. At this point was the resign ending the game.Another crusier was damaged, so Bismarck and Tirpitz would chase and probably sink. UK would be down to just 2 cruisers. All 4 sea zones were threatened for T4. I fully understand the resign.
