  1. Jeff Lange's avatar

Jeff Lange vs Jim Bodenheimer – Jeff Allies with a bid of 2 and completed at end of T7 with Allies at +10 POC

  2. Mircea Pauca's avatar

Mircea Pauca (Axis) defeated Bruce Monnin (Allies; bid 1.5) by concession in Turn 6. We had played WaS for AREA previously in Round 31 of this same Ladder.

T1: Bruce’s opening (which is incidentally exactly the one I use to use ;-)) fails both speed rolls to Barents. My Germans jump on it with everything and rip apart the rest, sinking Hood and 5 cruisers for only one pocket battleship and both battlecruisers damaged. Score +1 for Axis.

T2: This time all 4 fast British reach Barents, so Germans stay home and repair. 4 U-boats pounce on weak South Atlantic, but the 4 British sink 2 of them(!) delaying much the submarine pressure on sea freedom. Score stays the same at +1 Axis.

T3: To be really sure, British send 3 older battleships (444) to Barents too. 5 of the 8 speed rolls succeed, so facing overwhelming force, Germans switch to not-as-strong North Sea. Carnage ensues – British lose 4 battleships and 1 carrier, and Germans 4 light ships plus heavy damage on Bismarck. 3U neutralize SAtl. Axis gain 3 PoC, total +4.

T4: After this Pyrrhic victory, German deeper threat is reduced even if having all seas open. Could go to relatively easier South Atlantic, but then would be trapped with less options and still needing another sea victory, quite risky. So I go back to hard-ish Barents where if I defeat the fleet (~60%) and sink the convoy, victory is assured. More carnage ensues, with same huge Allied loss (4BB,1CV) vs 2 Germans sunk, Bismarck crippled and Tirpitz d4. Allied survivors are faster than the damaged Germans, so they run forward to their destination. Formidable gallantly sacrifices itself to screen the convoy, which unloads successfully to Murmansk! Allies gain back 2 PoC, total +2.

T5: Germans badly need to stay and repair, but then opportunity pops up, as a British fails to reinforce Barents. The ragtag 4 Germans are thrown as they are, and control Barents without losses! Still same Allied feat, running forwards Convoy 2B to Mother Russia. Marat diverts 2 submarines to prevent Russian control of Baltic, so Germans can uncontrol only SAtl but not NAtl. Allies gain back another PoC. total +1.

T6: A similar situation. British are even more weakened overall by cumulative losses so far. Germans try Barents again and win without loss, preventing convoy arrival. Wolfpacks uncontrol NSea and SAtl. Lord Mountbatten remembers his family was once Battenberg and proposes peace negotiations favorable to Germany.

Congratulations to Bruce Monnin for keeping the game in interesting balance so far while enduring repeated bad luck. Also thanks for his very gracious patience for my long delays and fair play to get in an accelerated session of 2 turns in the last day and lose in right combat instead of claiming forfait.

  3. Nicholas Markevich's avatar

    1) Tal Seaman (Allies) vs. Nick Markevich (Axis)

    2) Tal bid 1.5 POC to play the Allies.

    3) Nick won as the Axis.

    4) Tal resigned at the start of turn 6; the Axis lead was 7 POC.

    5) Tal and I have played WaS before.

  4. Rob Drozd's avatar

    1) Mike Kaye (Allies) and Rob Drozd (Axis)

    2) Mike bid 1 POC to play the Allies

    3) No winning side. We tied after the bid adjustment. Mike’s ASW underachieved the entire game allowing 3 U-Boats to sink Convoy2B on Turn 6. It was deja vu on Turn 8 when 16 ASW vs 7 U-Boats left me with 3 U-boats to attack Convoy3C, but this time the U-boats whiffed. The LBA allowed the convoy to limp into Russia with 3 damage. Turn 7 in South Atlantic had 6 ASW whiff on 4 U-Boats that promptly sunk 1 BB and disabled 2 other BBs to leave Eagle facing 4 Italian CAs with no escorts.

    4) Allies ended up with 1 POC (0 after the bid)

    5) Mike and I have played before.

1) John Lindley (Allies) and Michael Ussery (Axis)

    2) John bid 2 POC to play the Allies

    3) In a close game that went down to T8, the Allies prevailed.

    4) Allies ended up with 4 POC (2 after bid)

    5) This game was our first AREA match

  6. epworthian's avatar

In Match 10, Matthew played the Allies with a bid of 1.0 POC. The Allies played a Barents on 2 strategy, but resigned in Turn 4 when the Axis managed to sink 2 convoys with the POC at 5. I believe it was our first game.

  7. Tim's avatar

In Match #1 for the top of ladder, Tim (Allied -1.5) squared off against Bob Hamel (Axis). Failing both British battlecruiser speed rolls and with only 6 cruisers accompanying the Hood and Ark Royal, the Allied Barents looked weak, attracting a German sortie. British airstrikes landed two hits with 4 damage each on both German BCs and disabled the Spee.

In the ensuring 3 rounds of surface battle, the British lost 4 cruisers but sent both German BCs and a pocket BB to the bottom.

Turn 2 saw another Axis sortie to the Barents, where the British lost the new BB KGV, but sank 2 German cruisers and 1 more pocket BB.

A Turn 3 Italian victory in the South Atlantic where they triumphed and sank the Rodney at no cost to themselves, while the Kriegsmarine nursed their wounds.

On Turn 4, U-boats broke the North Sea open and the Luftwaffe disabled Convoy1A back to the US, while British air sank the Fiume, which had retreated with the rest of her sister Italian cruisers to the Med.

A Turn 5 Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe sortie, disabled Convoy2A and sank the Duke of York, but the Allies were able to re-stablish the blockade with the RAF sinking the Pola. In the Baltic, the U-boats crippled the Okt Revol for 3 damage.

Turn 6 saw more combat in the Barents with the Lutzow and Graf Spee being sunk in exchange for the Repulse and Convoy 1A. While activated for sailing, the Okt Revol elected to repair 1 damage.

Turn 7 saw the first Allied convoy landing as well as the damaged Okt Revol’s victory against the Graf Zeppelin in the Baltic, pushing POC to +7 Allied before the bid.

Needing to control two sea areas, decontrol one other area, The Axis decontrolled the North Atlantic with 1 U-boat against 9 ASW, but could not muster the dice to win either the Barents or the South Atlantic in the face of strong Allied forces.

    Thanks for playing, Bob..
Final Score + 8.5 Allied (after the bid).
This was our first AREA game of War at Sea.

  8. James Kramer Jr.'s avatar

Greg Smith (Axis) has defeated Jim Kramer Jr. (Allies – bid 1.5). Final score was Axis 3.5. Allies opened with modified MED strategy (MED in 2), convoys to England. Thru T3 the allied deployments held the Axis at bay with minimal losses for both sides. On T4 with the POC count at 0, the German subs (7) moved to break the NS block (18 ASW). They were successful and a CV was sunk. A CV was also sunk in the MED by LBA. POC count was now +1 Allies. On T5 the battle was joined with the DKM sending 2 BB, 2 BC, 3 PB, 1 CA and 1 CV to the NS. They were met by 6 BB, 2 CA, 2 CV and Eagle. Combat results cost the UK 2 BB, 2 CA, a CV and Eagle. While several DKM ships were severely damaged, none were lost. With a point swing of 6 to 2 for the Axis, they now had a +3 lead. T6 saw the UK abandon the MED and move to blockade the Germans. This was successful as the DKM did repairs and eliminated the last USSR BB in the Baltic. T7 saw no change in POC and the Allies prepared to push their last convoy to Russia and the DKM continued repairs. T8 brought Italian defections (advantage Allies), the U-boats kept the MED unclaimed, and a final battle in the Barents for the game began. The forces deployed were formidable. The entire DKM fleet (only Tirpitz had any damage) and LBA faced 4 KGV BB, 2 BC, 5 CA, Ark Royal and convoy 3C. Air strikes had hits but, none were sunk. Combat round 1 saw the UK fleet eliminate a BB, both BC’s, a PB and the Zepplin. The DKM round 1 fire was not deadly, but effective never the less, disabling or sinking all 6 UK heavies and 1 CA. Combat continued for 3 more rounds but the UK light ships never could get luck on their side. Eventually convoy 3C was cornered and sunk. The Allies won the turn 3 POC to 2, but the Axis had taken the game. Both Greg and I greatly enjoyed this our first game of WAS as opponents. Jim Kramer Jr.

  9. Mike Brophy's avatar

    Axis – Mike Brophy brophym@aol.com
    Allies – Lee A Kendter Jr lakendter@yahoo.com

Mike accepts Axis and 1.0 POC (our first match together)

Lee resigned at the end of T3 with the POC pegged at Axis +10.
Convoy1A declined to sail on T3, and the Axis won both the North & South Atlantic that turn!

The dice were too lopsided for me. While the 8 to 2 loss ratio isn’t to horrid, I mostly likely can’t recover from a 10 PoC lead with this amount of losses. I had a feeling 2 subs getting a double disable would be fatal in Satl. 5 more turns of text play isn’t worth it for a 5% chance to win. Go ahead and record a win.

  10. Karl Bodenheimer's avatar

Avi Solomon (Axis) wins vs Karl Bodenheimer (Allied bid 1.5). First time for us to play each other.

  11. Dave E.'s avatar

In match number 4, Dave Elkin took the Axis while Jonathan Lockwood won the allies with a bid of 1.5. A major battle erupted over the South Atlantic in turn 1 and continued throughout much of the game, with the Axis having some good die rolls and winning the points in the early rounds. The allies were able to bottle up the axis but not put them away early enough. The key to the game came when the 2nd and 3rd Convoys were unable to make it to their destination. In round 5, a disabled roll sent convoy 2 back to US. Then a devastating airstrike in turn 7 sank convoy 3 and the math gave the victory to the Axis, who lead by 4 POC going into the turn, and they also had the 1.5 in the bag as well. I thought Admiral Lockwood played very well, but had some bad dice rolls while the Axis had the hot bones much of the time.

The Russians were useless in the this game and the US came in very late.
